As October rolled to a close, one theme shone brightly: the power of affirmations and amplifying voices to foster belonging in our schools. From classrooms to boardrooms, from students to educators, every interaction demonstrated that true change begins with listening, celebrating, and co-creating. Together, we can continue building schools where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued—spaces where belonging isn't just a goal but a lived reality.

Downers Grove School District 58 and 99 visits (10/16) - Stepping back into my childhood schools in Districts 58 and 99 was a full-circle moment. For the first time in 20 years, I returned not just to reminisce but to celebrate 10 incredible educators shaping the lives of today’s students. Surprising teachers in their classrooms, touring my old schools, and listening to students share heartfelt affirmations for their educators reminded me of the power of recognition and gratitude. Reconnecting with my middle school guidance counselor Mr. Gross, and my 6th-grade teacher, Ms. Varys, was a special highlight, and I look forward to co-teaching a lesson with Ms. Varys' class in December.

West Aurora School District 129 (10/17) - Belonging took center stage as administrators, educators, and parents came together for a World Café dialogue. Stories of shared challenges and district strengths underscored the importance of community collaboration in fostering inclusion. It was an honor to facilitate this conversation and partner with Brynn Zingrebe, the 2024 IL Outstanding Early Career Educator, in amplifying these essential discussions.

Peoria School District 150 (10/22-10/23) - In Peoria School District, I engaged with administrators to explore strategies for fostering communal learning environments. From discussing actionable classroom strategies with the administrative team to hosting a virtual World Café the next evening with administrators, educators, and parents- the district’s dedication to fostering belonging was palpable. Conversations emphasized the importance of listening to all voices and co-creating solutions for inclusive classrooms.

West 40 (10/25) - The educators at West 40's Safe School Institute Day embodied unconditional love for their students and innovation in education. Addressing the unique challenges of alternative education settings, I keynoted the event facilitating a World Café. I was excited to share 2 breakout sessions focused on culturally responsive strategies, and the best part of the day was having lunch with the students who had created this website for me! From touring the safe school to seeing the store where families can shop for any items they need- I left knowing that the community West 40 has built wraps their families in unconditional love and support.

Illinois Education Association (10/26) - Sharing my journey and platform as IL Teacher of the Year with the Illinois Education Association executive committee was a powerful and emotional moment. Thank you to IEA for the beautifully crafted video they created of my students, colleagues, and story which affirmed the work I have been committed to this year and every year.

Association of IL Middle Schools and Plainfield District 202 (10/27) - The AIMS conference brought together middle school educators from across Illinois to identify shared challenges and solutions. Facilitating a World Café revealed the immense potential of collective problem-solving and collaboration. Later that day, at Plainfield District 202, high school students of diverse backgrounds shared their experiences and advocated for belonging. Hearing their voices reinforced the importance of centering student agency in creating inclusive school cultures.

Lewis University (10/30) - The month concluded with a virtual panel at Lewis University, where I joined regional State Teachers of the Year to share insights with aspiring educators. Guiding future teachers in navigating the complexities of teaching while remaining committed to equity and inclusion was a fitting end to this month’s focus on affirmation and belonging.

This month has been an extraordinary journey of affirming educators, uplifting student voices, and building bridges of belonging across Illinois schools. From reconnecting with my own teachers to facilitating deep conversations about inclusion, with students, parents, and educators- reinforces the transformative power of community and the collective determination to create spaces where everyone feels valued.
