October brought a fresh wave of experiences as Illinois Teacher of the Year, reconnecting me with students in ways that were both meaningful and inspiring. From sharing my journey with Westmont students in K-12 assemblies to hosting World Cafés with high schoolers on social media’s impact on belonging, each moment deepened my understanding of students' perspectives, and recommitted me to why we do this work! I even had a chance to see my class!
Westmont CSD 201- 10/2 - I visited all the schools in Westmont CSD 201, where I shared my journey from student to Illinois Teacher of the Year with students from kindergarten to high school. They asked me insightful questions about my experience! Afterward, we facilitated a World Café for 400 educators at Westmont High School, honoring seven remarkable teachers who have been fostering belonging in their schools.
Illinois Educators Association-10/4-, My union filmed a short video to share my story with our members. This allowed me to revisit Georgetown Elementary and Fischer Middle School, reconnecting with former colleagues and students. It was a day full of joyful reunions and happy tears. Naperville Neighbors United- 10/6 I was invited by NNU to host a World Café for high school students focused on how social media misuse impacts their sense of belonging. The students impressed me with their proactive solutions to hold themselves accountable for their behavior, both online and in school.
Spencer Foundation- 10/9 - 10/10, I attended the Spencer Convening on equity and education in Chicago. Collaborating with professors, donors, representatives from the U.S. Department of Education, and other education leaders was inspiring. We brainstormed innovative research designs to promote equity in education. I felt honored to be one of only two teachers present, providing a classroom perspective to these vital discussions.
South Cook County ISC - 10/11 It was a packed house, when I traveled to Thornton High School in South Cook County to deliver the opening keynote to over 400 educators. The principal graciously gave me a tour, showcasing the exceptional programs that support student growth and success.
Lyons Township High School- Later that day, I joined the equity ambassador team at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange for lunch and thought-provoking discussions on belonging. We also celebrated two dedicated educators for their impactful equity work at LTHS.
Maine West Township High School- 10/15, I visited Maine West Township High School, where we recognized two teachers whose co-taught biology classroom fosters an inclusive and motivating environment. I also stopped by the English department and had the chance to meet Dr. Sawsan Jaber, the 2023 Co-Cook County Regional Teacher of the Year.
Reflecting on this month, I am deeply grateful for each encounter and the commitment of these educators and especially students to creating spaces where everyone feels valued. Together, we are building pathways for belonging and equity in education, one conversation at a time. October has reinforced the importance of our collective efforts and the impact we can make when we come together for our students.
